PORTMARNOCK CS V ST PAULS COLLEGE JUNIOR FOOTBALL 14/01/2025
Report by: Jamie Murphy (TY)
St Paul’s travelled to DCU to face a strong Portmarnock side who had won their two previous group games in the DublinJunior Football Championship.
This was our first game playing in the B championship after recently being promoted. The team was looking to continue the success after last year’s great season in which we securedboth the Dublin and Leinster championships.
St Pauls were looking to get off to winning ways, while Portmarnock were looking to add to their tally of two wins already in the competition. The weather was fair with the sun shining and light breeze blowing. The atmosphere was tense with both teams looking to secure the win today.
The ball was thrown in to start the first half, both teams were tight at the get –go with both trading points early on. There was some very nice link up play from Eoin McGuirk and Luke Hayes to set up some good scores and a goal from Eoin McGuirk putting us ahead. Darragh O’Connor also got himself on the score sheet. Two nice points from Dara Abernethy had us up by 6 points at the break and with all to play for in the second half.
St Pauls drove on early in the second halfat one stage led by 12 points. The momentum swung with 2 quick goals from Portmarnock reducing our lead to only a few points. We kept tipping away at points with scores coming from Senan Russel, Darragh O’Connor, Luke Hayes and Eoin McGuirk. We left several scoring opportunities behind as our wides also mounted, however.
Disaster struck when we Lost Sean Thunder to injury. Portmarnock brought the game back to level. With not long left Portmarnock scored a decisive point, leading the game by 1 point. But with 20 seconds left Darragh O’Connor levelled the game to give both sides a share of the points.
